Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley is a story of a small town in Lily, Arkansas, where nothing more than ordinary seems to ever happen. Cullen, a high school senior, hears of a birdwatcher who claims to have spotted a Lazarus woodpecker, known to be extinct for many years. While the whole town gets all hyped up from the idea of there being a living Lazarus woodpecker, nothing in more startling than the realization that Cullen’s fifteen-year-old brother has surprisingly disappeared. As a missionary from Africa, who has lost his faith in the work he does, searches for a semblance of meaning in his life, he finds a strange relationship between Cullen and the small town in Arkansas.
